FROM THE HART
Constant crooners; drag queens in leather
Advice on love, relationships, and other issues relevant to sexual minorities.
Dear Taylor,
by Taylor Hart
I have the most wonderful lover in the world! He is caring, tender, understanding, intelligent, faithful and incredibly sexy! But he has one bad habit that is driving me crazy: he sings all of the time.
When I say he sings all of the time I don't mean that he sings frequently, I mean that he is constantly singing! He almost never stops! I have to admit that he does have a nice voice, but his constant crooning is driving me crazy! I'm not sure how much more I can take!
I've tried everything I can think of to get him to stop, or at least take intermissions, but he refuses to do so. He says that his singing is an expression of his happiness and the joy he takes in being alive. Well, his happiness is making me nuts. What should I do?
Dear S.O.S.,
Sick of Singing
I suggest that you stop your complaining and count your blessings. If your lover is as tender, caring, faithful and sexy as you describe him, then you are truly blessed. Remember: it could be worse. He could be unfaithful or addicted to drugs. There are many things worse than a lover who sings all of the time. I know many people whose lovers are deceased and I know that they would give anything to hear their lover singing and happy. So cherish his song. You never know when the song may end.
Dear Taylor,
I'm a gay male who is into the leather and Levi's scene. I hang out at one of the local leather bars and I belong to one of the leather clubs that operates out of that bar.
Recently, a drag queen has started hanging out in our bar. We told "him" that he is not welcome in our bar, but he still keeps coming every night. Now I hear that he wants to join our leather club.
I wish drag queens would just leave us alone. They've got their own bars to go to.
Lois Lane
The guys in our bar and club like real men, not make-up wearing sissies. I have nothing against drag queens personally, I just don't want to socialize with them. Let them stay on their side of the tracks and we will stay on ours! Real Men Only!
Dear Real Men Only,
If you have written to me in hopes of sympathy or agreement, boy, are you barking up the wrong tree!
I am totally against closed membership clubs. Though I find nothing wrong with the leather and Levi scene, (actually I enjoy it myself,) I cannot understand why some people in the scene exclude and discriminate against crossdressers, drag queens and women. After all, anyone can enjoy the leather scene. There are drag queens who are into leather and S&M. To exclude these people just because they are a little different from yourself inhibits the personal growth of yourself, your club, the gay and lesbian community and all people everywhere.
With all of the discrimination the gay, lesbian and bisexual community faces, it is hard to believe that we still spend a great deal of time discriminating against ourselves. How can we expect others to accept us if we cannot accept ourselves and each other?
I am a non-separatist. I believe that "United we stand, divided we fall." Why be worried about the presence of a drag queen? It's not like you'll wake up one morning with the desire to put on lipstick. Or are you worried that you might just look good in lipstick? Either way, if you are comfortable and secure with yourself the presence of people different from yourself won't bother you. Think about it.
Dear Readers,

HOUSE OF ST. JAMES
by Steven St. James
Ken Ishu, Utu/Beyond the Mirrors, Plus 8 Records
Feel the dark bass pounding through your speakers, with spacey turns and robotic bleeps. Makes you wonder, are you really alone or is there something lurking out in the darkness of space?
Ambient
Various artists, A brief history of Ambient, Virgin
This compilation is good for those old New Age music listeners who want to cross over. It best shows the compositional range of electronic music. That is, its limits are set only by its imagination.
Breakbeat
DJ Diplomat, Examples of Samples, White Label
Hot Phone Fun!
Proving that he never lost his hardcore. Coming at us with two cuts both over 150 bpm, Examples of Samples has been finding its way into underground clubs throughout the world. Even though this artist is not yet on a label, a hard record is good to find.
House
The Enigmatist, Total Immersion, B records
If you see this one in the stands or on a record list, look elsewhere. This cut held my attention for about 15 seconds. Total immersion is a total lame out.
Steven St. James is host of One Brother In the Basement, which brings you the best of underground dance music, featuring trance, tribal, house, and breakbeat. Forget the alternative, go real underground. Wednesday from 9 am to noon on WRUW 91.1 FM in Cleveland.
